Whenever we have holiday gatherings, I whip up these two dips. They are simple recipes with not a lot of ingredients, but they are major favorites in my house!
When I first met my in-laws, I was introduced to Frito Dip – which is also known as Beef Dip. They call it Frito Dip because they always serve it with Fritos. I’ve changed the recipe a little over the years, making it beefier!
My family are big French Onion Dip fans. I have to warn you that once you try this recipe for home made from scratch French Onion Dip… you’ll never use one of those powdered packages again! Caramelizing the onions takes a little time, but adds so much sweet onion-y flavor – it is worth it!
I’m also teaming up with some of my bloggy friends to share our Thanksgiving favorites – be sure to scroll to the end to see all the yummy goodness they have to offer!
French Onion Dip (based on this recipe by Alton Brown)
2 tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 cups diced onions
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 – 16oz container sour cream
3/4 cups mayo
1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
Caramelize onions in a pan over medium, medium-low heat. This will take a while. Make sure to go slow – if the onions are not caramelized all the way through, it will result in a bitter-tasting dip.
Cool onions. In a bowl, mix together all the other ingredients. Add cool onions. Refrigerate at least overnight to let all the flavors meld. Stir well before serving.
Beef Dip (aka Frito Dip)
3 packages of sliced Beef Lunchmeat
16 oz sour cream
1 tbsp granulated garlic
1 tsp black pepper
Chop up the beef lunchmeat into pieces about 1/2″ in size. Mix together all the ingredients. Refrigerate overnight to allow all the flavors to meld together. Stir well before serving. My in-laws prefer this dip with Fritos, but potato chips work well, too!
