Moore Love Mondays – Quilt Alongs

Created On: July 25, 2011  |  Updated: July 25, 2011  |   7 Comments

The internet does all kinds of amazing things. From recipes to the latest fad, we’re able to look up just about anything in a matter of seconds. By giving us door-to-door directions, it has made a traditional map nearly useless. And it completely obliterates that map by allowing us to connect with others all around the globe.

Quilt Alongs have become increasingly popular. In these groups, an organizer or organizer sets up a schedule whereby anyone can join in and make the quilt. The rules and specifics vary. Many have groups on Flickr so that members can share their progress. Here are some of my favorites:

Modern Block of the Month – this just started last week, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be joining in. A fun way to try making different types and styles of modern blocks. They just announced the fabric requirements, so I need to figure out what colors and fabrics I want to go with.

Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along – I’ve jumped on the bandwagon here, and gotten my first 6 blocks done, and my 7th is part-way. There are 111 blocks, and I’ll be repeating many of them to make the quilt big enough for my bed. The Quilt Along started a few weeks ago, and with most of the members doing a block a week to get the quilt done in a year, I have a little bit of catching up to do… but plenty of time. However, it is a big commitment considering the number of blocks I’ll be making! Everyone is doing the quilts in their own fabrics, I’m doing mine in all grey/white/cream:

There are lots of other Quilt Alongs going on – both past and present – that you can take part in. Here are a couple more:

Paintbox Quilt Along – Oh, Fransson!
Bloggers’ Block-a-palooza Quilt Along – Quilt Dad
Modern Log Cabin Quilting Apron-Along – Fat Quarterly

Enjoy, and I’ll see you online!

Always,

Wow, I can’t imagine the commitment and time this takes you! 111 blocks plus some. You are amazing. I am inspired to revisit giving more time to my arts, like photography and guitar. I also want to learn to play mandolin. I will think of you, Cara!

Interesting! I’ve never made a quilt, but it sounds like it would be fun to do if other people are doing it at the same time like that. Oh, and your quilt is looking very nice so far!

I have never heard of ‘quiltalong’. I LOVE quilts, but I don’t think I have the patience to actually make one myself. Who knows, I might surprise myself one day 🙂

Beautiful quilt…..I love quilts and the history and memories behind them. I wish I could quilt, but that’s not the case. I have few beautiful quilts I am saving for my boys that my mother in law made before she passed away from cancer.
