This month I designed a Lipstick quilt block as our free block for the month. The theme this month for our quilt blocks was beauty/style, and I wanted to design something fun and a little different, and also something that has a fun story connected to it.
Many of us have fun stories related to makeup – the first time we got to put it on, or adventures in experimenting with makeup, or even finding that perfect shade of lipstick (and then it immediately being discontinued and so the hunt begins again). Mine isn’t so on-the-nose.
In college, I studied Marketing and Advertising. In one of my classes, we were learning about how when money is tight, almost all purchases decrease. Especially luxuries. Which makes sense – if you have to reel in your budget, you’ll choose not to go on vacation, or buy a new fancy item. This holds true for makeup as well. When we’re tight on cash, we spend less on makeup. Except for lipstick. Lipstick sales would go up when the economy trends down. Of course this phenomenon was studied, and they discovered that we all like a little pick-me-up during hard times. Buying a big expensive item would be out of the budget, but a new shade of lipstick is inexpensive enough to squeeze into a tight budget! And a fresh shade of lipstick is such a fabulous pick-me-up!
This concept has had me thinking through the years. As quilters, what is our perfect little budget-friendly pick-me-up? Maybe an inexpensive new ruler? A Charm pack of fabric? Or perhaps a fat quarter? Something that inspires us to make, but still fits in our budget… the lipstick of the quilting world! I’m not sure what that would be, but as a quilty business owner, it gives me hope. That the economy will have highs and lows – but we all want to be inspired.
Speaking of inspiration, if you want to get the pattern for this quilt block, fill out the form below:
